Who hasn’t? Interest rates are at all-time lows. Folks have refinanced two and three times in as many years to save thousands of dollars in interest they would have otherwise paid.

There’s a similar lesser-known boom happening in the world of federal student loans. Refinancing or consolidating them can also help borrowers save thousands of dollars in interest expense, and consolidation can cut a borrower’s monthly payments down to a size that’s much more affordable.

The two most common types of federal student loans available today are Stafford loans (for students) and PLUS (Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students). The variable interest rates on these loans are the lowest they have been in over 30 years – currently, Stafford loans carry a variable rate of 3.46% while the student is in school, deferment and grace, and 4.06% in repayment. PLUS loan interest rates are currently 4.86% regardless of the student’s status.

If those rates would hold over the standard 10-year repayment term, that would be the end of this story. But, they won’t hold. Federal student loan interest rates reset every year on July 1; Stafford loans rates can climb as high as 8.25% and the PLUS cap is 9%.

The great news for borrowers is that consolidating these loans locks in a low interest rate. The formula for determining a Federal Consolidation Loan interest rate is to take the weighted average of the interest rates of the loans the borrower wishes to consolidate and round it up to the nearest 1/8%. So, for example, if a borrower had only Stafford loans in repayment issued since July 1, 1998, the variable interest rate on these loans is currently 4.06%, and the fixed interest rate for that borrower’s consolidation loan would be 4.125%. That’s 4.125% for the life of the loan -which can be up to 30 years depending on the borrower’s level of indebtedness.

Now, that’s a deal every person with student loans should be considering right now. Because on July 1, interest rates reset.

And there are other advantages to federal student loan consolidation. With extended repayment and graduated repayment options, borrowers’ monthly payments can be reduced by 50% or more -especially helpful to recent graduates trying to make ends meet. And, if a borrower has multiple lenders and multiple monthly payments, consolidation lets the borrower make a single and (generally) a lower payment to a single lender – simplifying bill payment and improving cash flow. Finally, federal student loan consolidation is free – there are absolutely no fees to consolidate.

Although the terms of a Federal Consolidation Loan are exactly the same, regardless of who lends you the money, a number of lenders are offering incentives to get borrowers to consolidate with them. And, these incentives can save borrower hundreds, even thousands of dollars in additional interest. Most common is a .25% interest rate discount when borrowers agree to repay their new consolidation loans electronically (direct debit). A more significant discount is offered by some lenders when borrowers make timely monthly payments on their new consolidation loans. For example, ConsolidateYourLoans.com offers a 1% interest rate reduction after the borrower has made the first 36 consolidation loan payments on time. Other lenders offer the same discount after 48 or 60 payments, and others offer lesser discounts at other payment intervals, but the idea is the same. Just keep in mind, the faster you get the discount and larger the discount is, the more you can save.

There are a handful of federal student loan consolidators and, right now, the volume of loans they are originating is large, but manageable. Most consolidations are completed in 45-60 days. But, you can bet that the number of people seeking consolidation is going to grow as the deadline (June 30, 2003) approaches. So, if loan consolidation sounds like a good idea to you, read on to see if it warrants your further investigation and, if it does, get your application in quickly.

Is Student Loan Consolidation Right for You?

Federal student loan consolidation is a great financial opportunity, but it’s not right for everyone. To make the best choice for you, you should consider the following: Q. Can you take on a longer repayment term in exchange for lower monthly payments? A. For most borrowers, loan consolidation extends the repayment term from the standard 10-year (Stafford loan) term to up to 30 years, depending on your balance. A longer repayment term means that, unless you prepay your loan, you will pay more interest than you would on your unconsolidated loans. You can control your interest cost by choosing one or more of the following: ·Request a shorter repayment term than your balance allows. ·If you can afford it, choose an equal payment plan. You should always make monthly payments that are as large as you can comfortably afford, and an equal payment plan will cost you the least because you are paying all principal and interest due each month. A graduated repayment plan will reduce your monthly payments in the early years, and you might need to choose one of these plans to make ends meet, but they will cost you more in total interest. ·Prepay your loan whenever you can. Just send a note in to your loan servicer with your over-payment asking that it be posted to your principal balance. ·Don’t get behind in your payments. Interest will continue to accrue on your unpaid balance, costing you more.

With college costs continuing to grow at a pace of about 9% per year and investment returns on plan assets being flat or negative, the sponsors of the various prepaid tuition programs now project long-term cash shortages.

Investors in the program thought that they had purchased ‘paid up’ tuition credits under the program, regardless of the future rise in tuition costs. But now states anticipate notifying investors hat the plan cannot meet its projections, and so the investors must ‘pay up’ by making additional investments or bail out of the program. Colorado has already notified investors of the default and other states anticipate similar actions in the future. Other states are considering more creative options. Most plans agree that the growth of plan assets will not keep pace with college tuition inflation over the next decade.

Investors are irked because they thought that these plans represented a guarantee backed up by the sponsoring state and are shocked to learn that this is not the case.

Of course, a recovery of the financial markets will greatly help ease the burden, but many investment advisers do not expect that to happen in the near future.

A subject that was once kept in the home is being moved to the school systems because the teaching of financial education in the home is failing. In 2002, 75% of the graduating high school seniors could not answer basic financial concepts. To solve the problem, teachers at all levels are being asked or pressured to include lessons on subjects such as credit, debt, money management and investments.

A simple, but yet effective money management lesson is to teach children how to write checks and balance a checkbook. It may not be as glamorous as teaching stocks or mutual funds, but will provide practical experience for children of all socioeconomic backgrounds. In a recent study, 87% of the US adult population or 172 million people use a checking account to pay bills. In today’s world, it may seem that the concept of using paper checks to pay bills is falling to wayside with the onset of ATM / debit cards, direct deposit and electronic funds transfers (EFT). Do not be fooled. The Federal Reserve Bank is predicting to process 50 billion paper checks in 2003. The Nilson Report also states that the volume of paper checks will rise between 2% – 4% each year, through 2020.

A successful lesson plan can help a child develop the foundation necessary to build important money management skills that they will need through out their lifetime. Understanding basic financial tools, will help students manage their money, stay within budget and problem solve. Timothy Liptrap, a co-author of the 68 page lesson plan How to Write Checks states “students, who understand how to budget, spend and manage their money, will be better off than many adults in today’s world.”

According to Liptrap, Teachers who create their own lessons should “keep the lesson plan practical” while teaching conceptual skills. “Each month when a parent sits down to pay the bills, they should have their child pull-up a seat to assist and learn. A lesson plan should replicate this experience in the classroom by providing practice checks, bank statements, mock invoices and check registers for each student.”

Writing skills are essential for succeeding in high school, college, and at a job. Writing is not just an end result, but also a process that helps us develop our ideas and think logically. Begin by brainstorming topics, collecting information, taking a lot of notes, and asking a lot of questions. Keep your notes and sources organized as you go.

When developing a topic,one should look for patterns and relationships, try to draw conclusions, try discussing one’s ideas with classmates, teachers and parents. A new os diffrent perspective can help shake up ones thinking.

How to get Started

The first step towards writing a quality research paper is to organize what is to be written. It is always nice to develop an outline to help to stay on track as we write, identifying the main points and what is to be the conclusion. The introduction should give your reader an idea of the essay’s intent, including a basic statement of what the essay will discuss. One should always keep the basic outline of a simple easy first and follow it , further changes can be made as required but the basic layout is followed always. The following are the parts of the basic layout of an essay or a research paper: -The Introduction -The Body -The Conclusion

The introduction should give the reader an idea of the essay’s or papers intent, including a basic statement of what the essay will discuss. The body presents the evidence that supports the writers idea. Here concrete examples should be used and generalities should be avoided as much as possible. The conclusion should summarize and make sense of the evidence presented by the writer in the body (The Keys to Effective Writing, 2005).

These are the steps to be followed before writing any kind of paper or essay. After these basic guidelines are followed ammendments can be made according to the nature of the research paper and according to the different writing styles. Writing College research papers

College courses demand many different kinds of writing that employ a variety of strategies for different audiences. During college, it may be required to write long essays or short answers in response to examination questions or one may be asked to keep a journal, write a lab report, and document the process one uses to perform research. College writing or writing college research papers, also called academic writing, is assigned to teach the critical thinking and writing skills needed to communicate in classes and in the workplace. The quality of one’s writing depends on the quality of the thinking one does about his topic or his assignment.

The whole writing process is divided into three steps namely prewriting, writing, and rewriting or revising phases. -Prewriting: In the prewriting phase one ponders over the questions like what he has to write about, what are his feelings about the topic to be written, how is the topic to be approached, how to organize the materials and the audience who will be reading the paper.

-Writing: In this phase the plan is implemented by working out the details and fine-tuning thoughts. -Rewriting: In the phase of rewriting or revising, the material or paper written is reviewed and techniques to for improving it are applied.

During these steps, there are some phases, which also take place before the final draft of the research paper is ready. The first phase would be understanding the assignment or research topic, which has been explained as prewriting earlier. Understanding the assignment or the research topic includes thinking over the fact that what kind of research topic it is and what is the main purpose of the research topic. Then in this context comes the issue of using systematic techniques such as the use of classic strategies, these strategies are ways to develop or organize a research paper, these include definition, division and classification, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, and process analysis.

Another important factor is looking at the topic from a multiple perspective, when a topic is viewed from multiple points of view; relationships which have not occurred before are visible. This approach invites the writer to look at the topic as an entity, as a process or a part of a process, and as a system or part of a system (The Writing Process, 2005).

Doing exploratory research is included here with the prewriting techniques because library research often is a way to generate ideas. As we review the literature on a subject or read in a particular area, we may note ideas that will help us get started with the writing. Analysis, the basis of many other strategies, is the process of breaking something into its parts and putting the parts back together so that one can better understand the whole. When we focus on understanding something better by comparing and contrasting it to something else, we identify and analyze the similarities and differences. Synthesizing information, all the opinions and research in support of the thesis or research paper are incorporated together. The relevant facts, statistics, expert opinion, and whatever can directly be observed with your own opinion and conclusions to persuade the audience that the thesis is correct is integrated. Synthesis is used in supporting the thesis and assembling the paper. In applying the strategy of evaluation after synthesis, first, the criteria to be used to evaluate the subject will be established and then applied to the specific parts of the subject that is being judged, and conclusions would be drawn that whether it meets the criteria.

The final draft is what we hand in as the completed paper. Before turning in the final draft, we should read what we have written all the way through at least once more. a black pen on the final paper. Choppy sentences, poor or nonexistent transitions between paragraphs, grammar and spelling errors, and other characteristics of a first draft should all disappear(The Writing Process, 2005).

Add to that process, the idea of synchronizing melody to the words you write – now that is even more difficult. With the many hit songs in mass media today, it\’s hard to find your own voice as a songwriter. If you\’re thinking on how to write a song, we have come up with seven easy steps to get you started:

1. Be Inspired. Oftentimes, a songwriter can come up with a hundred hindrances for writing. Yet one of the biggest challenges of being a songwriter is motivating oneself. The first step on learning how to write a song is to get that mental and emotional stimulation. You have to set your mind on a goal, and that is to come up with a great song at the end of the day.

2. Stay With It. Once you have captured that subject of inspiration, stay with it. You have to set your frame of mind to work on that idea. Make sure you are in a place where you\’re comfortable to write and express your ideas. Most songwriters prefer to sit in a quiet place with good scenery. Others favor an ambiance with relaxing music to soothe their thought flow.

3. Have Fun. You might be thinking, “How will this help me concentrate on my subject?” Having fun is an essential part in learning how to write a song. You have to find joy and fulfillment in what you are doing. Once you start writing, you can now play with words and work on your lyrics. Explore the possibilities of working with an instrument on hand. At the moment you get part of your desired melody, continually play it to stir up more tunes to add to your music.

4. Expand Your Horizons. Keep your ideas flowing. In this way, you can begin to develop your initial material. Reread the lyrics you\’ve written and expound on them. Construct a story about your subject or create another voice in your melody. Try to form progression in the chords of the song\’s tune.

5. Make Music Out of Lyrics. Use metaphorical descriptions and rhythmic patterns to titivate your song. It helps to know a little of poetry and literature to help influence your work. Bear in mind that in knowing how to write a song, it also helps to have knowledge on your genre of music.

6. Listen to Your Song. Once you\’ve come up with the lyrics and the melody to beat, make sure you listen to the entire song. While doing so, ask yourself if you are satisfied with your work and what you can do to make it better. The process of self-critique helps polish your song. Make sure you edit the necessary words that don\’t have nuance to the theme of your music. At the same time, make sure that the melody is plausible to your chosen subject.

7. Let Someone Listen. Your song is finished. The best way to know if you\’ve done well is to have someone listen to the product of your hard work. Feedback is vital in improving your next creation. Learning how to write a song from another person\’s point of view will make you grow as a songwriter.

Catchy, but overworked. We’re not talking about when to take a Viagra or Cialis. Professional photographers have known for decades the kinds of photos they capture when the serendipity springs up before their eyes. They capture the moment because they press the shutter at just the right mille-second. Sometimes such moments can be planned, and sometimes they cannot. Sometimes they are just there, and you have to snap it without thought for composition or lighting or any of the other elements we know are important for quality photography.

For example, you can plan for a photo full of the energy of the win when a person or a vehicle crosses the finish line. Or when you know something spectacular is about to happen, like the birth of a baby, having a camera ready for that first moment of life can result in a breathtaking picture. Such life moments can be captured if you are ready with your skill and talent and equipment. Your education, training and experience are as important as the serendipity in such instances.

Equally so, there is something to be said for the magic of the moment, captured forever on film or a CF card…. that moment when just the right elements come together for stunning composition, nothing that you could have planned or set up. Recently my husband and I escaped the heat of the desert and spent a weekend in the mountains where, one evening at dinner, we were seated on the veranda of the dining room. Just as our salads were served, the sun moved from behind clouds and the brilliant metal roofs of mountain homes were illuminated across the meadow. Bright red and green and blue and gray roof colors flooded our senses as if a bucket-full of marbles had been tossed against the green and brown mountainside. The sight was so full of energy and vitality that we could hardly speak with the vibrancy of it all.

That moment wasn’t planned. It just happened. Sometimes such experiences can be envisioned… in advance of the actual occurrence. For example, you know a harvest moon will be a spectacular sight, and you can prepare for shooting it by being in the right place at the right time. Determine ahead of time what angle you want and what location will provide the best access. The unpredictable can be made easier to manage with a little forethought. You can envision what might be, before it actually happens.

Exercising patience may open doors for a variety of unusually composed pictures, especially if you need to wait on just the right natural light, or shadow, or form or energy. Anticipating the conditions and then patiently waiting for them to occur, with your camera ready, keeps you on the cutting edge of your profession.

The Literature School is not only a successful school, it is the ideal multi-grade family school. Books can be read aloud together, with each child processing the information on his own level. The youngest child can narrate, the middle-aged child can write, the high schooler can report’after doing additional research about the topic, era or personality. Processing will create more lasting knowledge. I have found this easiest by requiring a written summary of the day’s reading.

In narration, the child ‘tells back,’ in his own words, a chapter, a short book or a poem. This technique is a trademark of the + Charlotte Mason method and is explained fully in her books as well as in Karen Andreola’s A Charlotte Mason Companion. Narration is a particularly good technique to use with a younger child who does not yet write fluently.
